DescriptionJapanese antique large futon cover with a design of Shochikubai, Three Friends of Winter; pine, bamboo and plum. Symbolizing the qualities of each: vitality of pine – evergreen even in the cold and snow; vigor of bamboo – growing with unstoppable strength; and plum – grace, beauty and anticipation of Spring. On this futon covering, the pine is large and growing around it is the blossoming plum. Smaller shoots of plum and bamboo grow low out of the winter-hardened ground. The design is created using the tsutsugaki technique of tube-drawn paste resist and dyed indigo. Made of cotton in seven panels sewn together.
