Antique Japanese Green & Red Glazed Oribe Tea Bowl with Silver Rim, 19th Century

$28.56 $43.7
DescriptionAn original antique Japanese Oribe ware tea bowl featuring a rich and dramatic combination of green and deep reddish-brown glaze, creating a vivid, painterly surface full of movement and depth. The interior displays especially striking pools and washes of color, blues, greens, browns and tan, with the spontaneous character and natural variation that make Oribe ceramics so highly prized. The exterior is adorned with a molded roundel motif, adding another layer of visual interest and subtle relief to the form. The bowl is finished with a silver-trimmed rim, a thoughtful embellishment that enhances both its appearance and functionality while lending the piece a refined presence. Its elegant foot, balanced proportions, and expressive glazing make it particularly appealing for display or tea-related use.Oribe ware originated in the Mino region of Japan and is celebrated for its bold aesthetics, asymmetrical beauty, and inventive glaze effects. This example reflects that tradition well, combining artistic freedom with the quiet strength and tactility admired in Japanese tea ceramics.Provenance: From the personal collection of Frederic Cheever Torrey (1864-1935),partner of Vickery, Atkins & Torrey, interior design firm and art gallery founded in San Francisco in 1888.The gallery, most famous for its role in helping to introduce California to Impressionism, also offered fine works of Asian porcelain and Japanese woodblock prints. The location moved from several places in San Francisco and settled at 236 Post Street (now called Maiden Lane) when the 1906 earthquake hit. Though the resulting fire destroyed the gallery, Henry Atkins and gallery employees were able to rescue 3 wagon loads of art. In time, the partners opened a sweeping multi-leveled gallery in their permanent location at 550 Sutter Street.Frederic Torrey was the expert collector behind the gallery’s opulent array of Asian art in addition to oil paintings , prints and photographs. His home on Canyon Rd in Berkeley is now simply called Torrey House and was the location of his personal collection which included, most famously, Marcel Duchamp’s “Nude Descending a Staircase”.An evaluation was done in the 1930’s by TZ Shiota, a prominent SF Tea Ceremony Dealer, when Frederic Torrey’s great grandchildren inherited the collection. The collection was stored in a trunk since his death in 1935.Age: Late Edo period Circa early 19th CenturyDimensions: 2 1/2″ high x 4 3/4″
