Antique Japanese Karatsu Ware Jar White Crackle Glaze & Silver Rim, Edo Period

$13.22 $23.14
DescriptionAntique Japanese Karatsu ware jar dating to the Edo period, featuring a beautifully developed white crackle glaze and a later-applied silver-mounted rim.The form is classically proportioned, with a gently swelling body and slightly tapering base, embodying the understated aesthetics of Karatsu ceramics. The surface is covered in a soft milky white glaze, intricately veined with natural crackle (kannyū) that has deepened over time, creating a network of fine lines that enhance both texture and visual depth. The glaze subtly transitions in tone, pooling and thinning across the form to reveal areas of warmth and variation, a hallmark of traditional Karatsu firing techniques. The organic crackle pattern reflects centuries of age and use, giving the piece a quiet, contemplative presence aligned with wabi-sabi sensibilities. The mouth is finished with a silver rim (kuchigane), likely added to stabilize and protect the lip—an indication that the vessel was both valued and used. This contrast between the luminous glaze and the cool metallic edge adds a refined visual accent.Karatsu ware, produced in Kyushu, is among Japan’s most celebrated ceramic traditions, prized for its naturalistic surfaces and close association with the tea ceremony. Pieces such as this would have been appreciated for their simplicity, tactility, and the way they evolve over time.Provenance: From the personal collection of Frederic Cheever Torrey (1864-1935),partner of Vickery, Atkins & Torrey, interior design firm and art gallery founded in San Francisco in 1888.The gallery, most famous for its role in helping to introduce California to Impressionism, also offered fine works of Asian porcelain and Japanese woodblock prints. The location moved from several places in San Francisco and settled at 236 Post Street (now called Maiden Lane) when the 1906 earthquake hit. Though the resulting fire destroyed the gallery, Henry Atkins and gallery employees were able to rescue 3 wagon loads of art. In time, the partners opened a sweeping multi-leveled gallery in their permanent location at 550 Sutter Street.Frederic Torrey was the expert collector behind the gallery’s opulent array of Asian art in addition to oil paintings , prints and photographs. His home on Canyon Rd in Berkeley is now simply called Torrey House and was the location of his personal collection which included, most famously, Marcel Duchamp’s “Nude Descending a Staircase”.An evaluation was done in the 1930’s by TZ Shiota, a prominent SF Tea Ceremony Dealer, when Frederic Torrey’s great grandchildren inherited the collection. The collection was stored in a trunk since his death in 1935.Has the original collector’s label #31Edo Period Circa early 18th centuryDimensions: 4 5/8″ x 4″
