DescriptionA beautiful antique Japanese gilt gold wood hand carved sculpture of Amida Buddha (Amitabha) standing gracefully upon a lotus pedestal and backed by an elaborate aureole. The figure is depicted in a calm, compassionate stance with one hand raised in a gesture of reassurance and blessing, a traditional mudra associated with Amida’s promise of salvation and guidance to the Western Pure Land. The Buddha stands upon a finely carved lotus blossom base, symbolizing purity and spiritual awakening. The lotus rises from the base in layered petals supporting the serene figure above. Behind the figure is a striking leaf-shaped mandorla (aureole) richly carved with swirling cloud forms, representing the divine radiance and heavenly realm surrounding enlightened beings. The sculpture is carved in wood and finished with traditional gilt decoration, where gold leaf was carefully applied over a prepared lacquer ground. Areas of darker surface patina contrast beautifully with the remaining gold, creating depth and emphasizing the finely carved drapery folds of the robe and the elegant proportions of the figure.Buddhist sculptures such as this were traditionally enshrined in Japanese household altars (butsudan) or temple settings. Amida Buddha is one of the most beloved figures in Japanese Buddhism and is central to the Pure Land tradition, representing infinite compassion and the promise of rebirth in the Pure Land through faith and devotion.Age: Edo period (1603 – 1868) Circa early 18th CenturyDimensions: 30″ high x 10″
