Rare Chinese Qingbai Celadon Porcelain Vase Northern Song, 10th–12th Century

DescriptionA rare Chinese Qingbai glazed triple-neck porcelain vessel dating to the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127). The elegant form features three delicately rising necks emerging from a unified body, creating a sculptural silhouette that is both refined and unusual. Such multi-neck forms required a high level of skill to pot and fire successfully and were produced in the celebrated kilns of southern China, most notably in Jiangxi Province, where Qingbai porcelain reached its highest refinement during the Song period.The vessel is covered in a luminous Qingbai glaze, a translucent bluish-white glaze prized for its purity and subtle color. When fired in reduction at high temperature, the small amount of iron in the glaze produces a soft pale blue tone that pools gently in recesses and along edges. This delicate glaze effect gives Qingbai wares their characteristic ethereal appearance, often described by scholars as resembling “frozen moonlight.”The neck is decorated with an elegant floral scroll pattern accompanied by small bats in flight, an auspicious design long associated with blessings and good fortune in Chinese culture. The bat (fu) is a homophone for the Chinese word meaning good fortune, making it a powerful symbol of happiness and prosperity. The design was created through fine incised carving beneath the glaze, where the artisan first cut the floral and bat motifs into the leather-hard porcelain body using a sharp metal tool. After carving, the vessel was coated with the translucent Qingbai glaze and fired at high temperature. During firing, the glaze naturally pooled within the incised lines, subtly emphasizing the delicate floral scrollwork and bats while preserving the soft translucent character of the glaze.During the Northern Song Dynasty, Chinese ceramic production achieved extraordinary technical sophistication. Kilns perfected thin porcelain bodies and refined glazing techniques that would influence ceramic traditions across Asia and beyond.
