DescriptionPair samurai kote (armored sleeves), constructed with a combination of iron chainmail (kusari) and hexagonal plate armor (karuta). These sleeves are backed in traditional indigo-dyed cotton, featuring elegant textile patterns of waves and sailing ships, both symbolic of protection and good fortune. The iron plating includes embossed figural elements, such as shell-form knuckle guards, raised circular motifs resembling chrysanthemum crests, and detailed ribbed shell guards along the forearms—all of which suggest a higher-ranking samurai or ceremonial armor. The tekko (hand guards) are fully articulated and connected to the kote with iron mail, allowing flexibility while maintaining full hand protection. Edged in silk brocade with gilt accents, and retaining original tie cords, this pair is an exceptional survival of Edo period craftsmanship. The haidate designed to protect the upper thighs, mirrors the same armored construction and textile backing, suggesting this set remained together through timeAge: Mid to late Edo period 1603 – 186825″ long 7 1/4″ wide
