DescriptionThis Edo-period Japanese samurai jingasa (陣笠) features a lacquered surface with a textured crackled finish, designed for durability and resistance to the elements. The slightly domed shape with a raised central point helps deflect strikes while maintaining a lightweight structure for ease of wear.Decorating the surface are gold mon (family crests) of the Oda clan (織田氏), featuring the Oda Mokko mon (織田木瓜紋), a stylized five-petal melon flower enclosed within a circular border. This crest was used by the powerful Oda clan, most famously associated with Oda Nobunaga, one of Japan’s most influential daimyo during the late 16th century. An additional inscribed kanji character appears on the surface, possibly denoting the wearer’s rank or military affiliation.Jingasa was traditionally worn by samurai and ashigaru (foot soldiers) as a form of lightweight armor. While primarily used for protection, it also served as a symbol of status and clan allegiance, with the mon identifying the wearer’s military unit.Custom metal base can be supplied for an additional $350 (see photo for example).Age: Edo period 1603 – 1868Dimensions: 16″ diameter
